Who we are
We will never sell or rent your email address or private information ever.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
If you subscribe to our daily or weekly Commons Search newsletters, we store your email address, the date and time you subscribed and possible error and bounce messages. Our newsletter is managed on our own server, using sendy mailing list software combined with Amazon mailing service and we use tracking links in our emails to see which emails are opened and which articles are clicked. This data is anonymous.
You can unsubscribe by clicking on the personalized unsubscribe link at the end of every newsletter.
When you leave a comment on our site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and your IP address to help spam detection and to block former members whose privileges were taken away.
When you use our contact form, we provide our address and email so that you can send letters. If you would like your letter or email published, you must state that you give permission for that, in the text of your letter.
Embedded content from other websites
We use the Google analytics tool to obtain statistics about the visitors of our website. All info is handled by Google. Info about how Google handles this data is at https://www.google.com/policies/technologies/partner-sites/
Who we share your data with
We do like to forward our authors' work to other media, to get the greatest exposure for your ideas. If we get a submission from you, we will assume that you've read and agree to the Writer's Guidelines and that you give us permission to send the articles out and that you are allowing reprinting based on creative commons terms.
We retain the right to publish your articles and images you include in them that are yours in collections in books or other websites, and, for images, in other articles on this site.
If you submit an article for first publication, we often send it to other media outlets. These articles are also often syndicated in our news boxes, an RSS feed.
Any content you create may be used in our FAQs or help sections. And with related websites.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment and/or submit an article, quicklink, diary, etc. , the content and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-ups, like comments or social networking. You do have the ability to delete all your submitted content, whenever you like.
What rights you have over your data
If you have become a member of Commons Search, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
How we use any content you submit
When registering, we ask for your data in our registration process. We ask for your name, email, location, gender and bio in our registration process. We NEVER display your email address to anyone. Your name, location, and bio do appear on your individual authors page on our site. Your bio appears on every article you submit. We do not sell your personal information to anyone.
Under circumstances where we determine that members may be misusing our systems, such activities may be reported to law enforcement agencies. In such cases, Commons Search may release personally identifiable information, including name and address, to those agencies.
Petitions and Surveys
For petitions and surveys you've signed or completed, we treat your name, city, state, and comments as public information - for example, we may provide compilations of petitions, with your comments, to the President and legislators, other targets, or to the press. We will not make your street address publicly available, but we may transmit it to members of Congress and to the President as part of a petition. This is a standard industry practice in such situations. In no such case will we disclose your email address or phone number without your permission. We may also make your comments, along with your first name, city, and state available to the press and public online. All of this must be consented to, when you signup.
If you choose to make a donation to Commons Search, your credit card information will be used only for this transaction through our secure online payment system. We do not retain credit card information.
We display online advertising with third-party vendors, including Google. In some cases, those third-party vendors may decide which ads to show you based on your prior visits to the Site. At no time will you be personally identified to those third-party vendors, nor will any of the information you share with us be shared with those third-party vendors. If you prefer to opt out of the use of these third-party cookies on the Site, you can do so by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative opt out page.
